Courses for January – April 2017 Announced

Dr. Robert H. Stockman, Director of the Wilmette Institute, has announced courses for January through April 2017. Among the courses are three new ones and one that has been revised.

The first new course is Creating Unity with Friendship, Fun, Social Vitality, and Laughter. It begins on December 30, 2016, and runs through February 17, 2017.The course takes its purpose from a statement made by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and published in The Promulgation of Universal Peace (218): “[L]augh, smile and rejoice in order that others may be made happy by you.” The course invites you to “Come build unified friendships, relationships, marriages, and communities with this light-hearted skill-building course. Expand your ability to deepen friendships, have fun together, extend hospitality, share humorous stories, take a lighter approach to challenges, and more.” You will find it excellent preparation for couple dates, neighborhood and family activities, and social events.”

The second new course is Creating a Coherent Marriage, Family, and Community Life, which will be offered in Portuguese only under the title Criando uma Vida Matrimonial, Familiar e Comunitária Coerente. The course is a collaboration between the Wilmette Institute (online) and the Southeast Bahá’í Regional Council in Brazil (in person). The Lead Faculty for the course will be Susanne Alexander. She will be assisted by Fariba Shaikhzadeh Vahdat, a Wilmette Institute faculty member, a Persian Bahá’í living in Brazil, and a member of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Brazil, and Nahid Shams, another Persian Bahá’í living in Brazil. Learners will begin the course online on January 13, 2017. Then they will meet in person in Brazil during the weekend of January 20–22. Following the weekend meeting, the learners will undertake four weeks of online course work, ending February 24.

The third new course is The Life of Bahá’u’lláh, a nine-unit course that starts on February 7 and runs through March 28. The objectives of the course are to learn about the major events in Bahá’u’lláh’s life; to gain an understanding of the opposition that Bahá’u’lláh encountered and the effects of this upon Him; to understand better the social and cultural setting of the Middle East in which He lived; to enable the participants to meditate upon Who Bahá’u’lláh was and what His life means for them; and to develop skills to explain the life of Bahá’u’lláh to others.

The course that has been revised is Creating a Fortress for Well-Being and Salvation: Strengthening Your Marriage. The course description encourages couples “in the early years of marriage (others are welcome too) to deepen their experience of the divine institution of marriage, which Bahá’u’lláh refers to as a ‘fortress for well-being and salvation.’ Couples will have opportunities to deepen their friendship, expand communication and consultation skills, enhance well-being and salvation, establish roles and responsibilities as spouses, prepare to be parents/step-parents, and balance home life and service opportunities.” The course will run from March 17 through May 26.
