Do You Want a Degree That Includes Some Bahá’í Studies Courses?
Every year the Wilmette Institute hears from a handful of Bahá’ís who want to pursue a degree in Bahá’í Studies.
At this point in the development of the Bahá’í Faith in North America, no degree in Bahá’í Studies exists. Moreover, the requirements for such a field of study have not been defined, and one cannot get a job in the field. Since American accrediting agencies only accredit degree programs—not courses—the Wilmette Institute cannot become an accredited, degree-granting institution any time soon. For these reasons, the Wilmette Institute is not planning to create a degree in Bahá’í Studies.
However, it is possible to get a Master’s degree in Religious Studies or an “Individualized Master of Arts” degree at some educational institutions in the United States. In 1999, a Bahá’í who took several Wilmette Institute courses used them toward his individualized Master’s degree. Another Bahá’í working on a certificate in religious studies (similar to a Master’s degree) included the Wilmette Institute’s online course on the Kitáb-i-Aqdas in his degree.
The Wilmette Institute is currently exploring with several higher educational institutions the possibility of Bahá’ís including Wilmette Institute courses in their Master’s degree programs.
Now the Wilmette Institute needs to know who is interested in this option.
- Are you interested?
- Do you know someone who is?
- Are you or a friend interested in a particular university?
If you or someone you know is interested in including Wilmette Institute courses in a Master’s program, please let us know. We may be able to help make contact with your chosen university and provide it with the information it needs to consider your request.
