Education Under Fire: Launching Phase 2, August through December
On August 27 Education Under Fire (EUF) launched the second phase of its successful campaign to raise awareness of the plight of the Iranian Baha’i community and the despicable policies of the Iranian government on the right of all its citizens to higher education.
Specifically, the new phase of EUF calls upon the government of Iran to respect the right to education as a universal human right and to disallow all discriminatory policies in higher education.
One element of the new EUF campaign aims to raise the number of the screening/conversations from 200 to 1,000 by December 31, 2012. The centerpiece will be the DVD entitled Education Under Fire, which is being offered free at www.educationunderfire.com/freedvd/.
The free DVD is available to anyone who is willing to introduce the film and hold discussions in small, intimate settings—such as university classrooms, high-school classrooms, libraries, community centers, homes, interfaith gatherings, human-rights meetings, and so on.
Friends of BIHE Open Letter
The second element of the new EUF campaign aims to enlist thousands to sign a new Friends of the Baha’i Institute for Higher Education Open Letter (www.educationunderfire.com/openletter/). This element of the campaign is intended to keep pressure on the Iranian government.
The Friends of BIHE Open Letter calls on the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran to act in accordance with its constitution and with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Iran is a signatory.
Asking family members, friends, and acquaintances to sign the Open Letter can open doors to conversations and perhaps lead to attendance at a small screening.
For those attending intimate screenings/conversations, signing the Open Letter provides an “action” that those moved by the documentary can take.
Supporters will also make their solidarity with the campaign public by adding their names and affiliations to the letter.
In December 2012 the Open Letter will be forwarded to Iranian authorities in a comprehensive binder. Accompanying the Open Letter will be public statements that were made during the first phase of EUF and that may be made during this second phase of EUF. These materials will also be posted online so that everyone may access them.
