Understanding the Value of Guided Online Study

Debby Hastings of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, gained a perspective on globalization and on Islam through the Wilmette Institute’s course One Common Faith:

Debby HastingsIn studying One Common Faith I have gained a clear overview of the world’s history since the coming of Baha’u’llah. . . . Learning about the causes and repercussions of materialism, the development of globalization, both the positive and negative effects, and religion as a civilizing force was very helpful to me. The insights provided by One Common Faith, as well as the supplementary reading material, have expanded my understanding and ability to discuss these issues from a Baha’i perspective.

It was a new experience for me interacting with a tutor and other students from around the world, and I appreciated the diverse responses that were shared. Everyone had their own way of approaching the material, and I learned a lot from the other participants. . . .The commentary in One Common Faith, as well my research helped me to develop an appreciation for the contributions of Islam to the advancement of civilization. Before that I only looked at Islam in negative terms because of its treatment of women and violence in the world. This experience has been a very positive one for me, and I would highly recommend an on-line course study with the Wilmette Institute to others.

I was able to bring up many of the concepts presented in One Common Faith in my conversations with my husband and friends. At our firesides and deepenings I shared topics that we were learning about.

There are so many opportunities to connect what we have learned in One Common Faith to present-day world affairs. Many conversations I have with friends led to something we studied about, and instead of just lamenting the deplorable state of the world, I can connect the topic to some insight I gained in the course. I am so grateful to the Universal House of Justice for giving us this brilliant, hopeful, insightful commentary on the state of the world today, and how the Message of Baha’u’llah will bring about peace and justice.
